Region IX Projects

California Safe Routes to School Clearinghouse

The Clearinghouse exists to offer support to local activists and public agency staff in their quest to develop Safe Routes to School in their California communities. We provide materials and consultation to those who request it. Funding for this project is provided by The California Endowment.

WomanCare Plus Project

Funded by the Office of Population Affairs, the purpose of the Fertility Awareness Method (FAM) Project is to expand the body of knowledge regarding the reasons why family planning clients choose FAM, specifically the Standard Days Method using CycleBeads, and what the predictors of success are among these clients. In conjunction with Georgetown University's Institute of Reproductive Health, CHT-RG will conduct research at two California clinics to identify and evaluate innovative strategies that could lead to increased or improved utilization of this method, and to increase knowledge and support for individuals and couples wishing to use it.

Chronic Care Implementation Conference

November 2006—February 2007 (completed)

Funded by the California Health Care Foundation, the primary goal is to accelerate the pace of chronic care system change in Alameda County, with particular focus on diabetes care. Staff worked with a planning committee of representatives from community health agencies to plan and conduct a conference held on January 19, 2007. The conference brought together over 70 staff and community leaders in Chronic Care, providing a networking opportunity for clinics and medical practices interested in sharing ideas for best practices in management of diabetes in Alameda County. There will be follow-up meetings to check on progress towards planning local collaborative chronic care projects in 2007 that are related to diabetes.

Healthy Child Care Consultant Network Support Center (NSC)

The Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) funds the Healthy Child Care Consultant Network Support Center (NSC). Education Development Center, Inc. Region X Projects

Partners in Prevention (PIP)

CHT-RG of Seattle, in collaboration with Public Health/Seattle-King County, local youth and community based organizations, developed and implemented a Youth Leadership Training to provide youth leaders the tools and skills needed to educate and communicate drug prevention messages to peers, family and community. Utilizing youth input, CHT-RG developed training curriculum for a 2.5 day retreat for youth, ages 14 – 20, that promoted and enhanced youth leadership capacities. During the retreat, youth leaders presented topics ranging from media literacy and social marketing to survival skills and body image; retreat attendees also included community-based prevention specialists, school advisors and counselors. As a result of the retreat, school and community teams created action plans and were given mini-grants to implement various school and community-based prevention projects.
